This is a model of the Armoured Personnel Carrier from Aliens, modelled with
Imagine 2.0, using the Halcyon model kit for measurements. It was modelled
on a 2 meg Amiga 500+ crawling along at 7.14MHz. Amazing eh?
It's big, so I haven't got a clue what the finished model looks like, but
rather than trim it down, I thought all you lovely Imagineers would like it
in its entirety. I haven't got the lights quite right either.
Details:-
The light on the roof (ROOFLIGHT) flashes white now and again. In the
film, where the APC first makes an appearance, the roof light flashes twice
for some reason.
The wheels.. err ... spin, as you'd expect, and the front ones should
steer by rotating about their Z-axes.
The front chainguns should rotate between 45 degrees left and 90 degrees
right. The ends (if you want to be really accurate) should rotate too.
The rear gun hasn't actually got any holes in the barrel. Whoops. I
forgot. Anyway, I think it is a Smart Gun (laser),like the ones Drake and
Vasquez use in the film (or the sentry units), so plenty of muzzle flash and
recoil. To slide it down the back of the APC:-
1) Select GUNPLATFORM. Translate it 26.6846 along its Y-axis.
2) While it's doing that, select REARGUNMAIN and rotate -90 about its Z-axis
3) Rotate GUNPLATFORM -90 about X-axis
4) Translate GUNPLATFORM down by 5 (5 along its Y-axis)
See the film for a better description of the motion.
The headlights and searchlight should be conical light sources, the side
and rear lights should be spherical.
You can do what the hell you like with it (short of passing it off as your
own work, of course. Or selling it for profit) as long as:-
a) 20th Century Fox don't object
b) You give me a mention as the creator.
If you create a picture or animation of the APC that you're particularly
proud of, then please upload it to aminet, because I'd love to see what the
finished model really looks like.
Other projects:-
Treehawk-from Gerry Anderson's "TerraHawks".
The model is finished, and a (crap) render is included in this archive.
Requires 3 meg (a guess) to render, and has extendable landing gear and
opening wings. If you're wondering how a 2 meg machine managed to render a 3
meg+ model, well, I rendered all the bits separately and stuck them
together.
Imperial Star Destroyer-Brushmapless at the moment but not for long. Renders
in 2 meg (just). Modelled using the MPC model kit for guidance. Will not
render in 2 megs when it is brushmapped, that's for certain. (Not too hot)
pictures included.
TerraHawk-from "Terrahawks". Tiltable wings and moving legs (looks a bit
like a bird, you see). Still got the brushmaps to do. Renders in 2 meg
without maps, 3 meg+ with.
Crypt Ship-I went for something different here, and modelled a ship from
Frank Hampson's drawings in "The Man From Nowhere", a Dan Dare story from
the old "Eagle" comic. Model finished and mapped. Picture included. Renders
in 2 megs (just).
These models are coming soon to aminet.
Future projects will include:-
Zeroid from Terrahawks
SPV from "Captain Scarlet"
Dropship from Aliens (with lots of details)
Snowspeeder from The Empire Strikes Back and
Insects-Ants, Mantids
Arachnids-Spiders, Scorpions
An X-Wing will be next, probably.
Email me on sce@cs.man.ac.uk if you have any comments, or suggestions for
models (models-2-order, if you like).
Enjoy.
